FCAs are conducted by a registered physiotherapist with extensive FCA experience and focus on understanding how an individual’s disability impacts their functional capacity, safety and ability to participate in daily life.

What Is a Functional Capacity Assessment?

A FCA is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary-informed assessment that evaluates a person’s physical, behavioural, sensory and cognitive function across key areas of daily living.

The assessment considers:

  • Mobility and transfers

  • Balance and falls risk/safety at home and in the community

  • Upper and lower limb function

  • Sensory processing abilities

  • Behaviours of concern

  • Functional cognitive ability

  • ADLs/PADLs

  • Medication/financial management

  • Community participation abilities (incl. transport)

  • Impact of disability on daily activities

*Standardised NDIS assessment tools such as the Vineland-3, CANS and WHODAS are used to quatify the participants levels of disability to justify their required level of support

The purpose of an FCA is to provide objective evidence to support appropriate and reasonable funding under the NDIS.

When Is an FCA Recommended?

An FCA may be appropriate when:

  • An NDIS plan review or reassessment is approaching

  • There has been a change in functional ability or support needs

  • Additional supports, therapies or assistive technology are being requested

  • A participant’s current funding does not reflect their functional limitations

  • Clear documentation is required to support decision-making

What does the FCA Process Involve?

  • Review of background information and relevant reports

  • In-depth functional assessment (in person or via Telehealth where appropriate)

  • Observation of functional tasks and daily activities

  • Clinical reasoning and analysis of functional impacts

  • Clear, structured written report with evidence-based recommendations

Assessments are conducted in environments relevant to the participant’s daily life, such as the home or community.

Timeframes

  • FCA reports in Queensland and New South Wales are typically completed and submitted within 2 weeks of the assessment

  • Timeframes may vary depending on complexity, location and information availability

Telehealth and In-Person Assessments

Functional Capacity Assessments can be completed:

  • In person (home or community-based)

  • Via Telehealth, where clinically appropriate

The assessment format is determined based on the participant’s needs, location and functional presentation.

Functional Capacity Assessments are typically funded through NDIS Capacity Building supports

 

Fees for NDIS services are in line with the current NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits. Quotes are provided prior to commencement.
